Giovanni Schoeman (1940-1981)
Giovanni Schoeman was born in South Africa and studied at the Johannesburg School of art, RSA, the Rawnsley Academy, London, the Academy of Arts & Crafts, Holland and the Brera Academy, Italy.
Schoeman was a sculptor of extraordinary creative ability. In the late 1960`s he contributed to the recently created technique of producing `Cold Cast Resin Metal`.
Cold-Cast Bronze` is a composition of 85 to 87% bronze powder with a resin binder. The metal powder is mixed into the resin to form a creamy mixture which is poured in to a mold. The resulting cast is one with an appearance of solid metal. Different metal powders such as bronze, brass, nickel and copper can be used depending on the effect desired. The remaining cavity is then filled with plain resin to give stability.
In the late 1960`s Schoeman used this technique in his studio in London`s West Hampstead. He soon expanded to a factory with apprentices in neighbouring Kentish Town.
His pieces were sold in London`s famous outdoor art markets at Hyde Park & Green Park.
